How to play baseball

Baseball is a game of throwing, hitting and running, played between two teams of nine. Adult pickup is less common than for soccer or basketball, but casual leagues and "batting practice" sessions are everywhere there are diamonds.

How a pickup game works

Pickup baseball is often a "sandlot" game: players split into two teams and play with however many show up, closing parts of the field. A common short version is "500" or "work-ups", where one batter hits and fielders earn points or rotate to bat.

Questions

What is the difference between baseball and softball?

Softball uses a bigger ball, a smaller field and underhand pitching. Slow-pitch softball is the most common adult recreational version.

How long does a baseball game take?

A professional game is about 2.5 to 3 hours; casual games of five to seven innings take 1 to 2 hours.

How many players do you need?

Nine per side for a full game, but pickup works with 4 or 5 a side by closing part of the field.
