How to play hockey

Ice hockey is fast, physical and hugely social, and the pickup version, "shinny" or drop-in hockey, is how many adults keep playing. Outdoor rinks in winter are free, and indoor arenas run drop-in ice times all year.

The basics

What you need

How a pickup game works

At shinny, everyone throws their stick in a pile at centre ice and one person splits them into two piles: those are the teams. Often there are no goalies and you score into small nets or between boots. At indoor drop-ins, you sign up for an ice time and bring both jerseys.

Questions

What is shinny?

Pickup hockey: no referees, no checking, teams picked from a pile of sticks, usually on an outdoor rink.

Do I need full equipment for drop-in hockey?

Indoors, yes, and most arenas require a helmet with a cage. Outdoor shinny is often played with just skates, stick, helmet and gloves.

Can adults learn hockey from scratch?

Yes. Many cities have adult learn-to-play programs and beginner drop-ins.
