How to play pickleball

Pickleball mixes tennis, badminton and ping pong on a small court, and it is the easiest racquet sport to start: most people play real games in their first hour. It is usually played as doubles with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.

The basics

What you need

How a pickup game works

Pickleball open play works on a paddle rack or a queue: put your paddle in line, and when a court frees up the next four paddles play. Games are short, about 10 to 15 minutes, and everyone rotates, so you meet new partners all session. Many courts mark levels on the rack: beginner, intermediate, advanced.

Questions

Why is pickleball so popular?

It is easy to learn, gentle on the body, very social and played on small courts, so you get real rallies from the first game.

The non-volley zone: the 7 feet (2.13 m) on each side of the net. You can step in it, but not while hitting a ball out of the air.

Yes. Many parks paint pickleball lines on tennis courts, and four pickleball courts fit on one tennis court.
