How to play volleyball

Volleyball is played indoors 6 against 6 and on sand 2 against 2 or 4 against 4. Pickup games are social and fast, and good teammates matter more than height.

What you need

How a pickup game works

Pickup volleyball usually runs on the "kings court" or rotating teams: teams of 4 to 6 form on the spot, the winning team stays, and the next team waits by the court. In gyms, drop-in sessions mix players into new teams every few games.

Questions

How many players are on a volleyball team?

Six indoors, two on the beach in competition, and anything from 3 to 6 in casual games.

Can you hit the ball with your feet?

Yes, under the modern rules any part of the body is allowed, but casual games often frown on it.

Is beach or indoor volleyball easier to start?

Indoor, with more teammates and less running. Beach is harder on the legs but very social.
