How to play squash
Squash is a fast indoor racquet sport played by two people in a four-walled court. Forty minutes of squash is one of the hardest workouts in any sport, and courts are found in gyms and clubs.
The basics
- Players take turns hitting the ball onto the front wall, above the tin and below the out line.
- The ball may bounce once on the floor before you hit it, and may use the side and back walls.
- Games go to 11 points, a point on every rally, win by 2. A match is best of five games.
- After you hit, you must clear the way so your opponent can reach the ball.
- If a player blocks the other, a "let" replays the point; a clear block gives a "stroke" (point) to the blocked player.
What you need
- A squash racquet.
- A ball: double-yellow-dot balls are for experienced players; beginners use single dot or blue dot balls that bounce more.
- Non-marking indoor shoes and protective eyewear.
How a pickup game works
Squash is booked by court time, so players find partners through club ladders, boxes (small leagues of players at the same level) and drop-in nights. Rotating "king of the court" sessions let three or four players share a court.
Pickup etiquette
- Ask for a let when you are blocked, and accept the call.
- Wear eye protection: the ball is small and fast.
- Knock on the door before entering a court.
- Do not walk into a court during a rally.
Your first games
- Use a bouncier ball as a beginner so rallies last.
- Return to the "T" in the middle of the court after each shot.
- Hit the ball deep along the side walls rather than hard.
Questions
Is squash a good workout?
Yes: an hour can burn 600 to 800 calories, depending on your level and weight.
What is the difference between squash and racquetball?
Racquetball uses a bigger, bouncier ball, a shorter racquet and lets you hit the ceiling. Squash has a tin at the bottom of the front wall.
Which ball should a beginner use?
A blue dot or single yellow dot ball, which bounces more than the double yellow dot ball experts use.
